Skin Care: How to Get Healthy, Beautiful Skin Naturally

Skin is the body’s largest organ and like the body’s other organs, the skin works best when properly cared for. It’s not difficult to get glowing, radiant skin naturally. All you need to do is adopt a few key lifestyle habits.

Drink Water

Skin cells get thirsty too. It’s important to drink an adequate amount of water a day, because other organs tend to absorb the hydrating goodness before the skin necessarily gets a chance to. You should drink at least eight glasses of water a day to see the maximum effects.

Eat Healthy

Sticking to a healthy, well-balanced diet with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables is one of the best things you can do to ensure a beautifully clear complexion. Omega-3 fats, as found in oily fish and flaxseed oil, help to prevent inflammation. As a general rule, the less processed a food is, the better it is for your skin. Stay away from excess sugar and salt, as these things can cause the skin to take on a bloated appearance.

Don’t Smoke

Smoking cigarettes aren’t just bad for your overall health. Smoking is also one of the most harmful things you can do for your skin, and it makes skin more prone to developing premature wrinkles. Quitting or abstaining from cigarettes will do a lot to ensure that skin radiates from the inside out.

Take a Break from the Tanning Bed

Who doesn’t love a healthy, natural glow? Well, tanning beds aren’t healthy and they aren’t natural. Excess exposure to UV rays damages the skin — actually burning or tanning is a sign of skin damage. If you must, get your tan outdoors — though wearing sunscreen is still recommended — so you can also get the benefits of vitamin D. It’s an essential vitamin that the body can absorb from sunlight.

Wear Sunscreen

Okay, so maybe sunscreen isn’t the most natural way to care for your skin, but it is by far the most important way to ensure a clear and undamaged complexion. Sunscreen works to create a literal screen between your skin and the sun. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is at least SPF 30. Apply a generous amount — most people don’t apply enough — and reapply every two to four hours to guarantee adequate sun protection and to prevent premature wrinkles, uneven texture and dull skin.
